Vondelpark Before 8am: A Different City

Vondelpark at noon on a summer Saturday is a crowd management exercise. It’s not unpleasant — there’s something cheerful about a city deciding collectively to lie in the grass — but it’s also not a place where you’ll hear yourself think. Come back before 8am and you’re in a different park entirely. The paths are mostly empty. Dog walkers move through in their own private loops. Joggers run past with the focused expression of people who’ve claimed this hour as genuinely theirs. The light through the trees at 7am in spring is the kind of thing that makes you remember why you moved to a city rather than away from one.

The main pond — the long, slightly irregular lake that runs through the centre of the park — is worth sitting beside for a while. The ducks are active in the early morning in a way that’s almost hectic compared to the pace of everything else. There are good benches along the northern bank where you can watch the water with a coffee and feel approximately like a person who has their life arranged correctly. The rose garden near the middle of the park is at its best in June mornings before the heat sets in — it’s a formal garden with a slightly formal quality to it that feels incongruous and right at the same time.

For movement rather than sitting, the outdoor gym equipment near the Amstelveenseweg entrance is free and consistently used by the same small group of regulars every morning. Not intimidating in the way gyms sometimes are — just people exercising in the open air near some trees, which is a reasonable way to spend 30 minutes.

For coffee before or after: Wildschut, a ten-minute walk away on Roelof Hartplein, opens early on weekdays and has strong coffee and the general atmosphere of a Amsterdam brown café that hasn’t tried too hard to be anything else. In summer, De Vondeltuin inside the park opens from 9am and has good flat whites and a terrace that catches the morning sun from the south. Either way, you’ve earned it. +++
