Portugal Tasca: The Best Petiscos in Amsterdam

There is a particular kind of restaurant that Amsterdam occasionally produces — hidden, unhurried, operating with a confidence that comes from knowing the regulars will be back regardless. Portugal Tasca in the Jordaan is exactly that. From the outside it looks like a private house that accidentally left its door open. Inside, it’s warm, slightly cramped in the way that all the best tavernas are, and serving petiscos — Portuguese tapas — that are substantially better than anything you’ll find in Amsterdam’s more visible food scene.

The bacalhau dishes are the reason to go. Bacalhau à brás (shredded salt cod with potato straw and eggs) is the reliable standout, but the daily specials board often has more interesting preparations — ask what’s best that evening. Petiscos arrive in small portions meant for sharing: croquetes, presunto, grilled chouriço, and sardine variations that actually taste like they came from somewhere near the Atlantic. Order several and take your time — this is not a restaurant for eating quickly.

The wine list is short and Portuguese, which is exactly right. A carafe of house vinho verde costs less than a craft beer at most Jordaan bars and pairs with almost everything on the menu. The staff know the food well and will steer you correctly if you ask what to order rather than making a decision yourself.

Book in advance, particularly on Thursday through Saturday evenings — the place holds perhaps 25 people and fills consistently. Tables are close together, so you’ll know what your neighbours are eating (probably the same things, because the menu doesn’t need much navigation). The Jordaan location puts you in one of Amsterdam’s nicest neighbourhoods; a walk along the canals before dinner is genuinely pleasant rather than just something to do.
